It is the Winter Solstice today and a perfect time of year to acknowledge what is not working for you and quite simply let it go; then identify what you would like to achieve and look to move forward with your life.
Sometimes we try to hold on to things that are no longer working for us out of habit or perceived security. We also hold onto people that are no longer there for us. It doesn’t mean we have failed, or even that they have failed us; it just means that things have changed.
“Change is inevitable, progress is optional.” (Tony Robbins)
It is often the fear of the unknown that keeps us trying to hold on. We replay past mistakes over again in our minds and hold onto stress and worry trying to work out how to make it work, allowing regret and fear to shape our present.
We often romanticise things as they were and long for it to be the same but if we are honest about the situation and realise that things have changed and aren’t the same then we can more easily move on.
“Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.” (Ann Landers)
I used to firmly believe that it showed great strength of character to hold on in times of adversity but I have realised how much better my life is when I learn to let go and that this too takes considerable strength.
Once you make the conscious decision to let go, there is a sense of relief and you often find that the fear and guilt subsides. As this happens there is also a release of stress and worry and once on the journey it feels empowering and exciting.
Put the past behind you. It does not mean you have to accept the way that people have treated you but you can put it into a different place and move on.
I have let some things that were important to me in the past go during this year and I know what I am asking to come into my life in the future.
Are you going to continue to try hold on to what is no longer working for you, or are you going to move forward and make progress?
